Darth Vader comes to the ATRiuM

David Prowse, the original Darth Vader, will be taking part in a special Star Wars Q & A on Friday 4 November from 7pm – 9pm at the University of Glamorgan’s ATRiuM campus.
The event marks the release of his autobiography ‘Straight from the Forces Mouth’.
David will also be appearing on The Moore Show, which is filmed at the ATRiuM campus.

Inaugural Lecture - Creative Industries – An Economic Miracle or Myth

The last decade has seen the ‘creative industries’ assume prominence in government policy with anecdotal claims of the potential growth in this emerging knowledge based industry sector. Creative Britain has spawned a multitude of ‘creative quarters’ in many of our cities as a panacea for economic regeneration. The lecture reviews the evidence of this phenomenon over the past thirty years and questions the endogenous growth associated with this sector.

"Glitter" Fashion Show

The Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries is hosting Glitter a Catwalk Fashion Show at the Cardiff Central Library, The Hayes, this Friday 28th January at 7pm.
As well as the fashion show there will be a presentation on trends and a Fashion Photography exhibition. There will also be pamper and make-over sessions, a live band and a bar.

With award-winning speakers from all over the UK who are leaders in their field, this event promises to be one of the most exciting, inspirational and productive event of 2010.
Empty Buildings or Creative Spaces?

Turning empty buildings into hubs of creativity and innovation will be the focus of an event being held at the Muni Arts Centre in Pontypridd next week.
Empty Buildings in the Creative Industries is being hosted by the University of Glamorgan’s Centre for Policy and Enterprise in Creative Industries (PECi) and takes place on 31st March.
The event is part of the Media Industry Knowledge Exchange (MIKE) project funded by the Welsh Assembly Government’s Academics for Business (A4B) programme. Glamorgan is working in partnership with Swansea Metropolitan and Aberystwyth universities on this exciting initiative to promote knowledge exchange among academic centres of excellence in Wales and the creative sector.
Dr Gill Allard, who heads up PECi said, “MIKE will ensure that relevant research and development activities being undertaken by key HEIs across Wales are made accessible to businesses. It is intended to encourage, stimulate and promote creativity, innovation, and market development – all factors that are crucial for sustainability in the current economic climate.”
She continued, “This event is the first of many that will bring together people from the broad fields of creative industries development and incubation, cultural and social enterprise and location management as well as academics.”

The Cardiff Confucius Institute, Cardiff University has partnered with the University of Glamorgan’s School of Creative and Cultural Industries to promote this new forum which will hold its first FREE meeting at ATRiuM on 12th November.
The global creative economy is interconnected and interdependent – both China and Wales can learn and work from each other by sharing good business practices, collaborative strategies and developing mutually beneficial business models to enable greater creativity and cultural diversity.
The event is sponsored by the Chinese Authorities and supported by Cardiff Council, Creative Business Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government.

Animation masterclass with Christian Arnau, EMCA

Independent art shows 'Bank and stick em up' comes to town

The non-profit shop space donated by Queens Arcade will open its doors between 22nd & 29th August, from 10am – 4pm daily. Entry is free and all are welcome.

George Ewart Evans Centenary Event

The Centre is pleased to announce an event to mark the centenary of the birth of the George Ewart Evans. George would have been one hundred on the 1st of April 2009 and we have organised a one day seminar to commemorate this on the same day. We are delighted that George’s family Matthew, former Chairman of Faber and Faber and his sisters Susan Gentleman, Mary Gersen and Jane Palmer will attend the event. David Gentleman, Artist and Illustrator and son-in-law of George Ewart will be speaking about their professional relationship and film-maker Colin Thomas will present his film ‘Let Dog’s Delight’. The event is being organised in conjunction with The Centre of Modern and Contemporary Wales and Evans biographer Professor Gareth Williams will talk about the life and times of George Ewart.
The day should prove to be a fascinating one for historians, storytellers, anthropologists, folklorists, philosophers, indeed anyone with an interest in people!
Registration will commence at 10am in the Zen Room.

Static:
An evening in front of the TV with a mother and son, merging the shows they watch with the reality of their broken relationship.
Knotted:
Story of two brothers growing up and having to deal with the domestic issue of a violent stepfather who abuses their mother.
Scouting for Girls at the ATRiuM as part of the SWN Interactive Seminar series

As part of the SWN Music Festival 2008 the ATRiuM will be playing host to the first annual SWN Music and Interactive Seminar Series on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th November 2008.
During the two day event there will be a number of seminars looking at the various aspects of the music and interactive industries from the latest technological developments at Lonely Planet online and How the Web can help Unsigned Music Acts to a session on the Promotion of Live Music in Wales.
The highlight of the two day event will be a Q&A session with Scouting for Girls. The session will be hosted by Radio 1 DJ Huw Stevens and will look at how the band made it from being unsigned to having a number one album within one year.

Game Show Symposium

Cultures of Translation: Adaptation in Film and Performance

This international conference focuses on various aspects of adaptation into film, performance, television, radio and other media.
Adaptation – the reworking of a verbal text or another artefact for a new audience in a different genre or media – is as old a practice as cultural production itself, yet its systematic study – adaptation studies – is only a recently emerging discipline. The Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries with its strengths in drama, music, media and communication and having strong links with the creative writing unit of the university is the editorial home of Journal of Adaptation in Film and Performance and is now hosting a major international and interdisciplinary conference that will shape the formation of this neglected field of research.

Produced by CCI Staff Michael Carklin and Jodie Allinson and using the using both the ancient Greek and ancient Roman versions of the play (by Sophocles and Seneca) as a starting point, the performance will be an intriguing, challenging and satisfying journey for the audience, exploring the story of Oedipus who, in trying to escape a prophecy that he will kill his father and marry his mother, discovers that he has inadvertently done just that.
