Staff | Visiting Professors | Máire Messenger Davies

Máire Messenger Davies is a successful author, academic and former journalist. Máire earned a BA in English from Trinity College Dublin, and a PhD in psychology from the University of East London.
As well as being a Visiting Professor at CCI, Máire is also Emerita Professor of Media Studies at the University of Ulster, where she was Director of the Centre for Media Research between 2004 and 2010. She now divides her time between Ulster, Cardiff, and London.
Máire worked for four years in the USA at Boston University and the University of Pennsylvania. Her special research interests are media and the young, with a particular interest in the role of drama and storytelling in socialisation and identity formation. Her latest book is Children, media and culture (2010), published by Open University Press.
Máire’s experiences have provided her with a special interest in the issues of national, regional and cultural identity which are so important in analysing and producing media in ‘small’ (but often globally influential) nations such as Wales and Ireland.
‘It is a real privilege to be involved in the kind of research being conducted at the ATRiuM, with its lively involvement in media production and its investigations into issues of identity formation and media. It’s always good to be working in Cardiff too – one of my favourite cities.’
