Student Stories | MA Scriptwriting | Gino

What attracted you to studying at Glamorgan?
Initially, the range of courses devoted to creative subjects like writing, film and English. Ultimately, I was convinced to apply because of the great reputation of the institution’s creative writing courses and the quality and experience of the course tutors.
What do you think about the postgraduate course that you are studying at Glamorgan?
The MA Scriptwriting course has a good balance between tutored and independent study. Classes and lectures are more focused and specialised than in an undergraduate degree, dealing with practical and theoretical skills that are of real use in our individual scripts. The tutors are superb – exceptionally knowledgeable, passionate and extremely open-minded to even the most unusual projects. Also, and probably most importantly, I actually enjoyed it.
Why did you choose this subject?
Scriptwriting was always a natural progression from my previous degree in Creative and Professional Writing. It combines my passions for film and writing with the potential for an MA qualification for doing what I love.
What was your learning and experience at Glamorgan like?
The strongest part of five years of study at Glamorgan has been the support from teaching staff and the general staff. We were encouraged and instructed on how to use the LRC and the available facilities, and the staff were always receptive to enquiries and problems. The support system for students is very solid.
How have your studies at Glamorgan helped you achieve your career goals?
I’ll be leaving the course with a full-length feature script under my belt, and a short film produced with a student from another course, thanks to my tutor. He was very supportive, and asked my permission if he could put a short script of mine in the running to be made by film students on the campus. Both of these should help in making the first steps into an extremely competitive industry.
What other valuable skills or experiences do you think you have gained from studying at Glamorgan?
I’ve gained the confidence to expose my writing to a larger audience from an earlier stage and to explore projects and ideas outside of my usual range. Beyond my writing, I’ve gained a great network of friends and colleagues that I hope to keep in touch with long after my studies are over.
What do you think about other aspects of life at Glamorgan?
The main campus at Treforest has pretty much everything you’d need to get through a few years of studying. The Union is within staggering distance of accommodation, and the sports hall is nearby too in case you need to work off six bottles of Smirnoff Ice. As for the new ATRiuM campus – It’s right in the centre of Cardiff.
If you were to recommend this course to someone else, what would you say?
If you really love to write and want to develop your voice and scriptwriting skills among a close-knit group of like-minded students and skilled tutors, then there’s no better place to do it.
