Division of Animation and Visual Effects

At the University of South Wales we have established a solid portfolio of highly successful animation and visual effects courses with excellent reputations that benefit both our students and the broad range of entertainment and communication media industries. Our graduates are employed throughout the world with credits on the latest blockbuster movies and computer games.

Animation and visual effects provision at the University of South Wales has evolved and grown alongside the industry, through developments from traditional film-based 2D and Stop-motion, the introduction of computer animation, the growth of the 3D CG visual effects industry and advancement of computer games from ‘bedroom industry’ to its position as a major force in the entertainment media industry.

A broad range of industry relevant skills are developed through our courses, from the creative spark of an idea to the final presentation screening. All courses within the Division benefit from the strong support of the industry, through visiting lecturers, presentations and live projects.

Our undergraduate animation courses within the Division are Skillset accredited for either Animation or Computer Animation, making USW the only higher education establishment in the UK to be recognised by this industry representing skills council, with this double seal of approval.

Facilities

“I’ve found that the tutors are there to guide and help you rather than dictate what they want you to do.”

Sarah Millman
MA Animation

Facilities such as our dedicated 2D, stop-motion and 3D computer animation studios, and the recently installed CG Animation Medialab with associated Render Farm, continue to provide an industry appropriate student experience.

Visual Effects and Motion Graphics students have access to two labs stocked with Apple iMac computers with industry standard software.

The creative environment at ATRiuM affords the opportunity for cross-specialism collaborations with students studying in areas such as acting, music, sound design and digital compositing, developing enthusiastic production teams.
