The Music Academy

The Music Academy has been established by the Creative and Cultural Industries (CCI) faculty at ATRiuM in conjunction with Roland UK to implement a single aim: the delivery of world-class music training both nationally and internationally.

Both organisations have collectively designed a range of music/technology related programmes that are an exciting development for music education in the UK, and the current courses are regarded as an initial step toward a growing portfolio of full and part time provision. Located in the centre of Cardiff, the music and technological provision at ATRiuM is widely regarded as amongst the best-equipped facilities in the UK, and the programmes are the only HE popular music awards approved by a major industry provider.

This symbiotic interface with industry is essential if students are to undertake a realistic educational experience that will ultimately prepare them for employment, and the academy’s philosophy is to ensure that all programmes reflect current practices, in addition to offering a broad range of study modes.

The Academy was officially opened on April 4th 2008 by Roland’s founder Mr Ikutaro Kakehashi, who visited the ATRiuM to receive an Honorary Professorship for his services to music, and to give the Academy his approval.

In addition to the full-time provision launched in October 2008, Short, Instrumental and Professional Programmes will be available on a part-time basis from August this year.

On the 5th April 2008, the Academy hosted the inaugural Battle of the Bands competition (sponsored by Roland and Rockschool), which is going to be an annual event open to 16–25 year olds from across the UK.
